What pays more the Notre Dame NBC contract or the BIG 10 NETWORK Contract?

Lots of quotes from University AD's coaches and links to plenty of other opinion pieces nationally:
http://espn.go.com/blog/bigten/post/_/id/8270/expansion-roundup-quotes-and-links As for who would make more TV money, or money overall, here are a couple of excerpts saying the Big Ten is just as if not more lucrative than ND's NBC deal. From Mandel's column: The Big Ten does not publicly release revenue-sharing figures, but it's been reported that its rights deals with ABC/ESPN and the Big Ten Network generate about $212 million annually. (That's in addition to the league's direct profits from its jointly owned network.) Add in this season's two BCS berths ($22.3 million) and five other bowl berths (about $14 million), and we're talking a minimally estimated $248.3 million in shared revenue, or $22.6 million per team. Therefore, any potential 12th team would have to add $22.6 million in "value" to renegotiated TV and bowl deals to prevent the others from losing money. With all due respect to Missouri, Pittsburgh, Syracuse and Rutgers (the most commonly discussed candidates), there's only one viable school that could guarantee that kind of gold mine: Notre Dame. The Irish rejected the Big Ten's last invitation in 1999, and the school has given no indication it's willing to reconsider. From Iowa column already posted: Ten years ago, Notre Dame’s television contract with NBC was unique and a major windfall for the Fighting Irish. The previous deal Notre Dame had with NBC that was set to expire in 2010 paid them an estimated $9 million per year. However, with the establishment of the Big Ten Network and the league’s ten year contract (that was signed in 2006) with ABC/ESPN was for $1 billion dollars. It also has a 25-year, $2.8 billion dollar deal with News Corp, who owns 49% of the Big Ten Network. The league’s year to year receipts from the News Corp deal is an equity distribution, so the exact amount each school receives each year fluctuates along with profitability. If you average out the contracts, the ABC/ESPN deal comes out to $9 million per year while the Big Ten Network revenues average out to just over $10 million per school over the duration of the contract. It wasn’t $10 million last year, it was closer to $7 million, but again, it’s based on profitability and the equity disbursement. Also, add in the equity value of the 51% ownership of the Big Ten Network by the member schools, which could be around $30 to $40 million per school right now and could double within a few years. This doesn’t count the $2 million per year the league gets from CBS for the basketball contract, which was a ten-year deal. I think you get the point; Notre Dame’s deal with NBC, while a good deal for a private and stand alone school, isn’t really special and every Big Ten school trumps it. |

Couldn't they just get IU to add football and that would be the twelfth team?

I seen it this morning on twitter and on some sites I read, but I've yet to see one credible source report it. I'm guessing its BS.

This is why no one should ever be getting their "news" from Twitter

Once you get to 11 (or more) fear of being split in half begins to kick in on the law of diminishing returns...
Perhaps Nan can fill in the details... |

Kid's probably not old enough to rub one out yet and he has a free ride to USC playing QB.

According to this Teddy Greenstein article, if the Big Ten ups it's membership by one, there will be enough money to go around that all 12 school's pots are increased looking at the "obvious" example schools that are most talked about (excludes ND and Texas, both of which would of course make Big Ten TV revenues blow sky high, no research needed). If the hurdle of more money is passed, I'd say it truly is a matter of when not if. I know many others on here came to that conclusion a while ago, but I was holding hope that we wouldn't expand. If it's going to happen, and it's not going to be Texas, I guess I prefer Mizzou over Rutgers and Pitt. To me, money was truly the key after academic criteria was met by a potential member(s). You have schools sitting off to the side that aren't really part of the debate or the undercurrent that wants a Big Ten Championship game for CFB like NW, IU and Purdue being prime examples. All 3 already have limited revenue streams compared to the 3 giants with full 100k-seat stadiums. If their piece of the pie isn't going to increase significantly, there isn't much incentive to expand. There's been a few quotes from Morgan Burke on it, Purdue's AD, over the last few months. He is extremely pragmatic by trade and his statements on expansion haven't differed. They have been among the most middle-of-the-road to negative that I've seen on the topic. My gut feeling is he isn't in favor of it, on the flip-side you have Wisc, PSU, and OSU ready to jump off a cliff to get it to happen. I believe 8 of 11 Presidents must be in favor of expansion for it to go through and my guess is at least that many will be able to be persuaded if this information is accurate. |
